Amazon is developing a Spider-Man Noir TV show for Prime Video Diversity (opens in a new tab).
The series, said to be in early development, is the second live-action Spider-Man project Prime Video is working on. The untitled production will be set in 1930s New York and will follow a more grey-haired, older and world-weary vigilante than the fans are used to.
Interestingly, the hero of the series will not be a variant of Peter Parker. In the comics, Spider-Man Noir is a different version of the universe known and loved by fans of Peter Parker. However, a source close to the project claims that this Peter Parker will not be the main character of the series.
Oren Uziel (The Lost City, 22 Jump Street) will write the script and serve as executive producer Spiderman Noir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal – all involved in varying degrees with Sony’s Spider-Verse project – will also serve as executive producers on the series.
It is unknown whether Nicolas Cage, who voiced Spider-Man Noir in the award-winning 2018 animated film Spider-Man: To the Spider-Verse, will play a character from the Amazon TV series. Another option available to Amazon could be Milo Ventimiglia, who voiced the character in Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. TechRadar has reached out to Amazon for comment and will report back if we learn anything new.
The Spider-Man Noir TV show comes three months after Amazon and Sony announced another Spider-Man spin-off series for Prime Video. Dubbed Silk: Society of Spidersthis project will star superpowered persona Cindy Moon and is believed to be an extension of Sony’s Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. Silk: Society of Spidersy will launch on Prime Video worldwide and MGM Plus in the US. Angela Kang is already her showrunner.
Analysis: a tangled web of crossovers
Amazon’s willingness to create its own Spider-Verse is all the more interesting when you consider the sheer amount of Spider-Man content (live action and animation) that is in development.
Currently, Sony Pictures owns the rights to over 900 Spider-Man characters, including webslinger appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony has also been hard at work creating its own Spider-Man-style multiverse – commonly referred to as the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) – which features projects like Venom, Morbiusand an upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Add Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, who stars in multiple MCU movies, and the addition of a third Spider-Verse in Prime Video will complicate things even further.
However, with SSU set to build To Spider-Versemultiverse exploration with upcoming Mrs Web movie, it’s possible that this Spider-Man Noir TV show will tie into Sony’s overall plan for a much larger Spider-Man multiverse. Alternatively, Sony may separate some of Amazon’s Spider-Man projects, especially if it plans to use the likes of Silk and Spider-Man Noir in its own multiverse.
No matter how Spiderman NoirTV series matches SSU, there’s a lot more Spidey content on the way. Spider-Man spin-off movies like Kraven the Hunter AND Venom 3, will also appear in cinemas in the next few years. In the meantime, a fourth MCU Spider-Man movie is reportedly in the works ahead of its June 2024 release, though it’s unclear if that potential release date is actually true.
