2022 has been a great year for phones so far. We’ve seen the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, for example, alongside the radically different Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, while Apple has released a whole range of phones, including the notch-less iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
We’re nearing the end of the year and major releases may be missing, but we expect things to pick up again in early 2023.
That’s why we’ve listed all the most anticipated upcoming phones in 2022 below, along with the ones you can expect in 2023. These are phones that in most cases are likely to be great, or at least should be interesting, unusual, or innovative.
Samsung Galaxy S23
The Samsung Galaxy S23 and its siblings – including the Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra – are likely to be the most popular Android flagships in 2023, and we expect to see them early in the year – possibly in February.
Leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra could get a monstrous 200MP camera and that every S23 model will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset globally instead of certain regions that will get Exynos.
At the time of writing, we haven’t heard much other information yet, but we expect rumors to keep rolling as we get closer to launch.
Google Pixel 8
The Google Pixel 7 didn’t arrive until October 2022, but it and the Pixel 7 Pro were so good we can’t wait to see what Google has in store for the Pixel 8.
We haven’t heard much about the phone so far other than it’s likely to use the Tensor 3 chipset and support satellite communications, but we expect class-leading cameras and generally strong software.
Stay tuned for more as leaks and rumors are sure to start rolling out in greater numbers as we get closer to the phone’s launch.
Google Pixel Fold
The Google Pixel Fold is a phone we’ve been hearing about for years, and the last we heard was that it could land in late 2022. That said, a 2023 launch now seems more likely.
From what we’ve heard so far, the Google Pixel Fold could have a 7.6-inch foldable OLED screen, a 5.8-inch cover display, and the same Tensor chipset as the Pixel 6 series. It could also look like the phone in the image above , which according to sources shows the Pixel Fold design.
We’d take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but it might be one of the few non-Samsung foldable phones worth getting excited about.
iPhone 15 Ultra
Of course, the entire iPhone 15 lineup is highly anticipated, but it’s the intriguing talk about the iPhone 15 Ultra that excites us the most.
According to rumors, this phone could land in place of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and could have better cameras than even the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as focus on battery life and a very high price.
It probably won’t be available until September 2023 if it lands at all, but it’s a phone worth saving up for.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is set to be Samsung’s next foldable flagship, but we don’t expect to see it until August 2023, so we’ll have to wait a while.
As such, we don’t know much about it yet, but an early leak indicates it uses the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and has similar cameras to the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
If nothing else, expect it to have a large foldable screen so it can double as a tablet, coupled with a similarly hefty price tag.
Sony Xperia IV
Sony Xperia I IV was one of the most interesting phones of 2022, thanks to the camera with continuous optical zoom. It’s a feature you won’t find in other brands, and it helped Sony’s flagship product stand out from the crowd.
We haven’t really heard anything about the Xperia 1V so far, but we expect it to offer similarly remarkable cameras, as well as a great screen and flagship power – and hopefully some innovative surprises. Look out for it around mid-2023.
Xiaomi 13Pro
The Xiaomi 13 Pro could be one of the best camera phones in 2023 as leaks suggest it will have a 1-inch camera sensor.
This is more than the sensors used in the vast majority of phones and could potentially lead to better latches.
In addition, the Xiaomi 13 Pro is rumored to have three 50MP cameras on the back, including wide-angle, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses. It is said to have a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, up to 12GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, a 4800mAh battery with 120W charging, and a 6.7-inch 2K screen.
So it can have impressive specs in line with the board. Look out for this phone in late 2022 or early 2023.
